    Following less than a month after Hurricane Katrina devastated the U.S. Gulf Coast, Hurricane Rita was the second hurricane of the season to reach Category 5 status (on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale) in the Gulf of Mexico.
    Tracking over the very warm waters of the Loop Current and within an environment of very weak vertical wind shear, Hurricane Rita grew from a tropical storm to a powerful Category 5 hurricane in less than 36 hours, with a peak intensity of 286 km/h (178 mph) winds.
