    Detective Comics (later retitled as Batman Detective Comics) is an American comic book series published by Detective Comics, later shortened to DC Comics. The first volume, published from 1937 to 2011 (and later continued in 2016), is best known for introducing the superhero Batman in Detective Comics #27 ( cover-dated May 1939).
    Between 1937 and 2011, there were 881 issues of the series. It is the longest-running comic book series in the United States. Detective Comics is an American comic book series published by Detective Comics, later shortened to DC Comics.
    Over time, Detective Comics transitioned from its anthology format to a series entirely about Batman and his associates. The series has gone through several different incarnations over the years. In 1978, when on the verge of cancellation, it was merged with the comic title Batman Family.
    Artifact Title: The "Detective Comics" title would become this over time as it shifted away from its roots as a detective anthology comic in favor of becoming a Batman comic instead.
