Groundhog Day, in the United States and Canada, day (February 2) on which the emergence of the groundhog (woodchuck) from its burrow is said to foretell the weather for the following six weeks.

Groundhog Day is observed every February 2 in the United States. It’s a day for the world-famous Punxsutawney Phil and other groundhogs (a.k.a. woodchucks) to emerge from their hallowed holes nationwide to scope out their shadow and decide whether spring is on the horizon or if we’re getting six more weeks of winter.
