The Nissan Cedric (Japanese: 日産・セドリック, Nissan Sedorikku) is a large automobile produced by Nissan from 1960 to 2015. It was developed to provide upscale transportation, competing with the Prince Skyline and Gloria which were later merged into the Nissan family.
The Cedric had a market reputation appealing to an older demographic, while the sister car Nissan Gloria, which has a more performance oriented reputation, aimed for younger buyers. This model shared much of its mechanicals with the newly released Cedric Cima which was a sales success for Nissan.
These generations were all offered as rear wheel drive cars, except for the Y34, which had optional all wheel drive. Civilian production of the Nissan Cedric ended in 2004, but the Y31 generation sedan was built until 2015 due to use as a fleet and taxi vehicle.
Nissan launched its own premium car, the Cedric 30, in 1960. Design chief Shozo Sato was responsible for the lines. An engineer by training, he had impressed executives at Nissan with his excellent watercolour rendering and was appointed head of the fledgling styling office.
