Euro NCAP ('New Car Assessment Programme') is an organisation that tests the safety of cars you can buy in Europe. It's not interested in other factors, such as fuel-efficiency or top speed – its only concern is safety. That includes how safe a car is if it's involved in a collision, as well as what safety technologies are fitted to the car.
A car's overall Euro NCAP rating is the result of tests in four areas: adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, pedestrian protection and safety assistance technology. Cars are given a percentage score in each of the four areas, although Euro NCAP doesn't share its exact scoring methodology.
The current Euro NCAP safety regime includes a dual rating, with some cars tested both with and without various high-tech safety features. This means some cars may get five stars if they are configured with autonomous emergency braking, for example, but drop to four stars for the second rating if this feature is not standard.
The range of tests has recently been expanded to accommodate some of the more sophisticated safety technology now being offered on cars, such as automatic braking and speed assistance. One of the ways that Euro NCAP measures the safety of cars is with crash-test dummies.
