At the 1921 Olympic Congress in Lausanne, it was decided to hold a winter version of the Olympic Games. A winter sports week (it was actually 11 days) was held in 1924 in Chamonix, France, in connection with the Paris Games held three months later; this event became the first Winter Olympic Games.
Competitors from 12 nations — Austria, Canada, Finland, France, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States — have participated in all 23 Winter Games to date. The host city for an Olympic Games had historically been chosen seven to eight years ahead of their celebration.
As is customary, the last medal presentation of the Games is held as part of the closing ceremony. Typically, the marathon medals are presented at the Summer Olympics, while the cross-country skiing mass start medals are awarded at the Winter Olympics. A medal ceremony is held after the conclusion of each Olympic event.
Athletes will go for gold in skiing, bobsleigh, curling, skating, snowboarding, luge and other cold-weather competitions. They’ll also be debuting a new winter sport – ski mountaineering. Looking ahead to this year’s Summer Games in Paris, here’s everything we know about the next Winter Olympics.
