Although Group B regulations stipulated that 200 examples of a new Group B machine had to be built before homologation would be granted, Lancia managed to get the Delta S4 rubber stamped after having completed a substantially lower figure – possibly as few as 70 S4 Stradale road cars.
This S4 Stradale is currently for sale at Girardo & Co. Girardo & Co. For 1985 Lancia developed a new rally car with turbocharging and supercharging. The homologation series was never completed.
So as to come in at under 2.5-litres when the FIA’s 1.4 multiplier for turbocharged motors was applied (and put the Delta S4 in the 2000-2500cc class which had a minimum weight limit of just 890kg), Lancia opted for a displacement of 1759cc achieved thanks to a bore and stroke of 88.5mm and 71.5mm respectively.
In order to be allowed to use the new Delta S4 in rallying, Lancia had to produce a road version for homologation. The regulations stipulated at least 200 units. The first vehicles rolled out of the halls of coachbuilder Savio in Turin in autumn 1985. The 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine in the Stradale (Italian for road) only produced 250 hp.
