    Later that year, however, Sharapova was diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff, an injury that eventually required surgery. She returned to the court in mid-2009, and over the next two seasons she claimed several WTA titles, though a Grand Slam championship eluded her; Sharapova’s best result occurred in 2011, when she lost the Wimbledon finals.
    Maria Sharapova is a former professional tennis player. She has played as a Russian player with the Women’s Tennis Association. Notably, she is the only Russian woman tennis player to hold a career Grand Slam. Although she was born in Russia, she has lived in the United States as a permanent resident since 1994.
