The Lancia Delta S4 (also known by its Abarth project code SE038) is a Group B rally car manufactured by the Italian car company Lancia. The Delta S4 competed in the World Rally Championship in 1985 and 1986, until Group B class was disbanded and the cars were eventually banned from competition completely by European sanctioning body FIA.
The Lancia Delta S4 was one of the fastest and most advanced Group B rally cars ever developed, it would also directly lead to the entire Group B class being shut down by the FIA. In some ways the Delta S4 was the quintessential Group B machine – it was a lighting fast, fire-breathing rally car that proved both successful and lethal.
With the Hewland four-wheel-drivetrain and at least 483 hp coming from the engine the Delta S4 was capable of standing to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds – and achieve that on an un-surfaced road. Lancia Delta S4 chassis #215 was the car used by Henri Toivonen and co-driver Sergio Cresto to win the 1986 Monte Carlo Rally.
The S4 was a direct descendant of the 037: the groundbreaking turbocharged and supercharged Abarth engine was first run in the back of a modified 037 as a prototype. But the insane power meant that a four-wheel drive system was necessary, to finally give Lancia a contender capable of taking on the Audi Quattro and Peugeot 205 T16.
